Day 5 - Chiang Khong (Thailand) to Houay Xai (Laos)

Day 5 - After a nice breakfast overlooking the Mekong River from Thailand we hopped on our bikes and went for a ride through Chiang Khong and found a car wash to detail the bikes. After a 60minute each detailing the bikes looked brand new and after paying our $5 for the detailing incl tip we headed back towards the Hotel via a local Service Station to fill the beasts. After gearing up and checking out of the hotel we headed to Chiang Khong immigration and customs to begin the paperwork to take the bikes to Laos. After about 3.5hrs and a number of Kop Kuhn Kup's we had our paperwork completed and with an hour till the ferry left headed back into Chiang Khong for a quick bite of lunch and a few litres of water ;). After our quick lunch it was back to the Ferry where we sat in full riding gear in direct sun for about 20more mins until they let us ride the bikes on, at this stage dripping with sweat and somewhat exhausted from the heat. The trip across the mekong was amazing and we shared our ferry with a Petrol Tanker and Supply truck. Arriving in Laos we got a bit lost and ended up heading over to the immigration checkpoint further down the river and then began the fun with Laos Customs. After another 3hrs or so we had our passports stamped and Visa's ready to go. As it was going to be getting dark within an hour or so we opted to stay the night in Houay Xai and head to Luang Namtha on Day 6 for our next overnight stay, We stayed in the Riverside Hotel which is lovely and has a beautiful view right on the Mekong River. After dinner we decided to get our first massage of the trip at a lovely little massage parlour that was just closing and then sat with them whilst they fed us free Beer Lao and we got to test out Google Translate which made for a fun and interesting coversation :). We then headed back to the hotel and crashed for the night.
